Many of the children who come to Harvest are behind in their education due to the challenges they\u2019ve faced. We believe every child deserves the power and opportunity that education provides. Upon arrival, each child\u2019s academic level is assessed so we can meet them where they are. We partner with the Lee County School System to ensure our kids receive the appropriate services, accommodations, and support they need to succeed in the classroom.<\/p>

Our staff also walk alongside our older teens as they prepare for life after high school\u2014helping them explore their next steps, whether that\u2019s applying to college, enrolling in trade school, finding employment, or securing housing. For those who choose to pursue further education, Harvest remains a place they can continue to call home.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

At Harvest, we believe that “Love equals time.”<\/b><\/strong> Our staff spend quality time with our kids every day\u2014playing games, watching movies, doing crafts, swimming, shooting hoops, going on hikes, and taking weekend outings. We know that playing together is one of the most powerful ways to show a child how deeply they are loved. Recreation is also essential to a child\u2019s physical, mental, and emotional development. Through play, children learn to have fun, share, work as a team, and solve problems. Each of our homes offers a variety of indoor and outdoor recreational activities\u2014but the hands-down favorite is our on-campus swimming pool!<\/p>

In addition to daily recreation, our long-term program includes weekend outings that create fun memories and new experiences. Our kids enjoy activities like roller-skating, hiking, biking, going to the park, watching the latest movie, shopping, trampoline parks, and more.<\/p>

Summer is a season full of adventure, including special overnight trips. One of the highlights of the year is a beach trip provided by Garden City Chapel for children in our long-term program. For many of our kids, this is their first time leaving Southwest Virginia\u2014and their very first time seeing the ocean. While at the beach, staff members take turns leading devotions, helping the kids see God\u2019s creativity, wonder, and love through His creation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The majority of the children who come to Harvest have experienced abuse, abandonment, and neglect\u2014traumas that leave deep, lasting scars and often hinder emotional and mental development. Many of our kids struggle with emotion regulation, trauma-related symptoms, and difficulty forming healthy attachments. To support their healing journey, every child at Harvest receives evidence-based, trauma-informed counseling from a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).<\/p>\n

Counseling provides our children with lifelong tools, including healthy coping strategies and emotional regulation skills. It also offers a safe space where they can begin the challenging but vital process of healing. We encourage our kids to actively participate in their counseling sessions and to practice the skills they\u2019re learning outside of the therapy room.<\/p>\n

In addition to professional counseling, all Harvest staff are trained in trauma-informed care, equipping them to interact with compassion, patience, and understanding as they care for children from hard places.<\/p>\n

Family counseling is also provided when appropriate. These sessions aim to strengthen family relationships, teach healthy communication, and create an environment that supports the child\u2019s long-term success. Counselors work with families to establish healthy boundaries, implement appropriate rules and discipline, and\u2014when possible\u2014support the goal of family reunification.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Our staff provide transportation for all routine medical, dental, and mental health appointments. When needed, transportation is also available for court appearances, family visitations, and placement-related appointments.<\/p>

There is no additional charge for trips within a two-hour radius of our campus. If transportation is required beyond that distance or for overnight travel, arrangements can be made for an additional fee.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

As a Christian organization affiliated with the Free Will Baptist Church, faith and Christian values are central to everything we do. Our staff lead nightly devotions in the cottages and are always open to answering questions our children may have about faith, God, or the Bible.<\/p>

Our children attend church services together, but participation is never required. Many of our kids find joy in worship\u2014singing during Praise and Worship, reciting memory verses, performing special songs, or participating in church plays.<\/p>

Children under age 11 attend Kids Church on Sunday mornings, while all children and teens participate in Wednesday night programs\u2014including Kids Class and Teen Youth Group. A summer highlight is always Vacation Bible School\u2014a fun-filled week of learning, games, crafts, and worship.\u00a0These gatherings provide fun, engaging lessons, games, and occasional outings that help build community and spiritual growth in a kid-friendly environment.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

At Harvest, we are committed to equipping our teens for the next phase of life\u2014adulthood. Our staff work intentionally to teach practical skills that will help them live independently and confidently.<\/p>

We encourage our teens to assist with meal preparation so they can learn how to cook. At age 13, each child becomes responsible for doing their own laundry. Once they turn 15, we help them obtain their learner\u2019s permit, and our staff provide driving lessons to support their independence.<\/p>

All children participate in weekly rotating chores that teach responsibility and how to maintain a home. Each child also receives an allowance, helping them develop essential money management skills.
