Committed to Child Care

In A Christian Environment

Founded on August 3, 1993, Harvest Child Care Ministries is a licensed, faith-based children’s home located in the heart of Lee County, Virginia. We are licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services, affiliated with the Free Will Baptist denomination, and accredited by EAGLE (Educational Assessment Guidelines Leading Toward Excellence).

At Harvest, our mission is to provide a safe, loving Christian home for children who have experienced abuse, abandonment, or neglect. Our dedicated houseparents serve as Christ-like role models, teaching children Christian values and equipping them to become responsible, productive members of society.

We are licensed to care for up to 51 children, ages 5 to 18, across our 36-acre mountainous campus, which includes three cottages and an administrative building. We currently offer two distinct programs to meet the unique needs of the children we serve: the Emergency & Assessment Shelter and our Long-term Program.

Emergency & Assessment Shelter

This short-term, highly structured program can house up to 22 boys and girls for stays of up to 45 days. While in the shelter, children receive a variety of assessments and services to address their individual needs. The program is staffed 24/7 by awake staff to ensure continuous supervision and support.

Long-Term Program

Designed to provide a stable and nurturing environment, our long-term program includes two cottages:

  • Ruby Dobson Cottage for up to 10 boys
  • Stickleyville Cottage for up to 8 girls

In this program, children benefit from a more relaxed structure, with live-in houseparents serving in a parental role one week at a time. This model fosters a family-like atmosphere that helps children feel safe and valued. Long-term residents enjoy weekly outings—such as skating, bowling, movies, and trips to the park—and occasional out-of-state trips during summer break.

Services Overview

Our kids attend a Free Will Baptist church every Sunday and Wednesday night. While we do not require participation in services, many of our kids choose to participate in Sunday Morning worship and Wednesday Youth group.

Both programs are provided various services such as psychiatry, medical care, recreation, counseling, and many other services.

A Lasting Impact

We serve children placed through Social Services, as well as those referred by churches and families in crisis. As one grateful parent shared:

“I believe sending my child to Harvest was the best thing I have ever done for him. Since he returned home, he is doing really well—going to school every day, working part-time, learning to drive, and attending church. Harvest also helped me learn to set limits, make rules, and enforce them. Our family was blessed to have found Harvest.”

Purpose

Harvest Free Will Baptist Child Care Ministries is a non-profit agency that provides residential group homes and emergency and assessment shelters for abused, neglected, abandoned, or troubled children. Our philosophy is that a healthy Christian home environment, caring parents, and a wholesome family life are more than fundamental necessities but are basic rights for every child. Because every child deserves a home.
